The bigger picture

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world's oldest continuous systems of healthcare, developed and refined over thousands of years. Rather than focusing on a single symptom, it looks at you as a whole — body, mind, and the way your energy (known as Qi, pronounced "chee") moves and settles. At Vireya, every treatment begins with listening, and is shaped around you and how you're feeling, in an unhurried, women-only setting.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture is one of the oldest and most established systems of healthcare in the world. It is based on the belief that life energy — known as Qi — flows through the body in channels called meridians.

How it works. An acupuncturist inserts very fine, single-use needles at precisely located points along the meridians. The choice of points is decided after a detailed consultation covering every aspect of your health and lifestyle, including pulse taking and observation of the tongue — both traditional methods of Chinese Medicine diagnosis. The aim is to direct the flow of Qi to encourage the body's own healing response, and restore physical, emotional and mental equilibrium.

Who it's for. Women come to us for all sorts of reasons — from specific concerns to a general wish to feel more rested, more at ease, more themselves. We're always happy to talk things through first on a free discovery call.

Ear acupuncture

NADA

A specific, gentle protocol that uses up to five small points in each ear — simple, soothing, and very easy to receive.

What happens in a session. Your session begins with a brief consultation — including pulse taking and looking at your tongue, as part of the wider Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment. You then sit quietly and comfortably while small auricular needles are placed in 5 points in each ear, depending on the person, and rest for around 30–40 minutes. Many describe NADA as grounding and quietly restful — a gentle way to take some time out.

Who it's for. It's often chosen by those looking for a calm, straightforward treatment, or who'd simply like to feel more settled and at ease.

Wet cupping · honoured tradition

Hijama

A traditional form of wet cupping with deep roots across many cultures, and a treasured place in prophetic tradition (the Sunnah) for many of our Muslim clients.

What happens in a session. Your session begins with a consultation about your health, lifestyle and how you're feeling — including pulse taking and looking at your tongue. Sterile cups are then placed on the skin to create a gentle suction, removed briefly while very fine, superficial scratches are made, then reapplied for a few minutes to draw out a small amount of blood. The whole treatment is carried out with single-use cups and blades, in a private room, by your female practitioner. Most women describe the sensation as a firm tightness rather than pain. Many say they feel lighter and calmer afterwards.

With understanding. For those who come to Hijama as part of the Sunnah, we honour that — with privacy, modesty, and care. If you prefer your appointment to fall on particular days of the lunar month, just let us know and we'll do our best to arrange it.

Therapeutic Chinese massage

TuiNa

A therapeutic form of Chinese massage (pronounced "twee-nah") that works along the body's meridians using pressing, kneading and stretching techniques.

What happens in a session. TuiNa is carried out clothed, so loose, comfortable layers work well. Your practitioner uses a range of firm, rhythmic movements — adapted to what feels right for you — to ease muscular tension and leave you feeling looser and more relaxed. The pressure is always tailored to your comfort; just say if you'd like more or less.

Who it's for. A good choice if you're carrying tension, or simply enjoy the deep relaxation of a focused, hands-on treatment. It pairs beautifully with acupuncture.

Dry cupping

Cupping Therapy

Suction cups placed on the skin to create a gentle vacuum that lifts the soft tissue — a relaxing, hands-off treatment with a long history.

What happens in a session. Cups may be left still on the skin, or glided smoothly over a little oil. It's often used to ease muscular tension and as a deeply relaxing part of a treatment. Cupping can leave temporary round marks that fade over a few days — these are completely normal and aren't painful bruises.

Who it's for. A gentle option if you're carrying tension or simply enjoy the comforting pull of the cups. Note: dry cupping does not involve any blood, unlike Hijama.

Warming therapy

Moxibustion

A warming therapy that uses moxa — a soft, dried herb (mugwort) — gently warmed near or on specific acupuncture points.

What happens in a session. You'll feel a pleasant, radiant warmth as the moxa is held close to the skin. Your practitioner stays with you throughout and removes the warmth long before it's ever uncomfortable.

Who it's for. Lovely if you enjoy comforting warmth, or as a complement to your acupuncture session. We'll talk through whether it's a good fit for you.

Moxibustion is usually included as part of an acupuncture session when required.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncturists use very fine, single-use needles inserted at precisely located points. Insertion is usually painless — though you may feel a tingle, warmth, heaviness, or a mild dull ache, often described as the 'Qi sensation'. Many people find the experience deeply relaxing.
Is Hijama painful?
Most women describe the sensation as a firm tightness rather than pain. The small surface scratches are very superficial and quick, and everything is carried out gently with single-use cups and blades.
Is the clinic really women-only?
Yes. Vireya is a women-only clinic, and every appointment is with a qualified female practitioner in a private room where your modesty and privacy are respected.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies from person to person, so we'll talk through a suggested plan on your first visit. Some women come regularly, others only occasionally — it's entirely up to you, with no pressure.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal so we can reach the areas being treated easily. For TuiNa massage, comfortable layers work well as it's done clothed.
Can I have Hijama at any point in the month?
Please get in touch and we'll advise on the best timing for you. We're always happy to arrange your appointment around what suits you.
What to expect

From preparation through aftercare

Each treatment unfolds a little differently. Open the one you're interested in for a step-by-step guide written by Aggie.

Acupuncture

How to prepare

  • Eat a light meal 1–3 hours before your appointment — please don't arrive too hungry or too full.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing so the areas below the elbows and knees can be easily accessed.
  • You're welcome to bring a blanket or large towel for extra comfort during treatment.

Your initial consultation

  • Your first visit begins with a detailed conversation about your main concerns, symptoms, lifestyle and medical history.
  • A Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment may include pulse taking, tongue observation, and gentle palpation of acupuncture channels or areas of tension.
  • We'll explain the treatment plan and expected outcomes, and answer any questions you have.

During your treatment

  • You'll lie comfortably on the treatment couch while very fine, sterile, single-use needles are inserted at precisely located points.
  • Needles are commonly placed on the arms and legs, but may also be used on the abdomen, back, ears or head depending on what we're working with.
  • Insertion is usually painless — though you may feel a tingle, warmth, heaviness, or a mild dull ache (often described as the 'Qi sensation').
  • Most people feel deeply relaxed during treatment, and some drift off to sleep.

After your treatment

  • Take your time getting up after the session — especially if you feel very relaxed.
  • Some notice immediate changes; others feel the benefits over the next 24–48 hours.
  • Mild soreness or temporary sensitivity can occasionally occur, particularly after musculoskeletal treatments.
  • Drink water, rest if you need to, avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and limit alcohol and excessive caffeine.
NADA Ear Acupuncture

How to prepare

  • Eat beforehand — please don't attend on an empty stomach.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, and remove ear jewellery if possible.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol or recreational drugs before the session.
  • Arrive calm and ready to sit quietly during treatment.
  • Let us know about pregnancy, medications, dizziness or bleeding disorders.

Your consultation

  • Your session begins with a brief consultation about how you're feeling — your sleep, stress, and overall wellbeing.
  • This includes pulse taking and looking at your tongue, as part of the wider Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment.

During your treatment

  • You'll sit comfortably in a calm, quiet space.
  • Up to five small, single-use needles are gently placed at specific points in each ear.
  • You then rest quietly for around 30 minutes — there's nothing for you to do.
  • Many describe NADA as grounding, settling and quietly restful — used to support stress reduction, emotional balance, relaxation, sleep and overall wellbeing.
Hijama (Wet Cupping)

How to prepare

  • Avoid red meat the day before your Hijama session.
  • Eat a light meal 2–4 hours before your appointment — please don't arrive overly hungry or immediately after a heavy meal.
  • Stay well hydrated throughout the day before your session.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment areas (typically the back, shoulders or legs).
  • Avoid intense exercise, sauna use or excessive caffeine before treatment.
  • Please let us know if you are pregnant, have low blood pressure or anaemia, take blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding disorder or skin condition, feel unwell, or have an active infection.

Your consultation

  • Your session begins with a consultation about your health concerns, symptoms and lifestyle — including pulse taking and looking at your tongue.
  • Your practitioner will explain the procedure and answer any questions before treatment begins.

Dry cupping (first stage)

  • Sterile cups are first placed on specific areas of the body to create a gentle suction.
  • You may feel tightness or pulling of the skin, warmth and increased circulation, and a sense of deep muscular pressure.
  • The cups are usually left in place for around 3 minutes.

Wet cupping (Hijama)

  • After the initial suction, the cups are removed and the area is wiped with olive oil to disinfect it.
  • Tiny, superficial scratches are made on the skin using sterile, single-use equipment.
  • The cups are then reapplied to gently draw out a small amount of plasma — these are broken capillaries, not deep blood.
  • Most people experience minimal discomfort, though sensitivity varies from person to person.
  • All equipment used is sterile, single-use and safely disposed of after treatment.

After your session

  • The treated areas are cleaned and dressed if needed.
  • Circular marks or mild bruising are completely normal and usually fade within several days to two weeks.
  • Some feel deeply relaxed, lighter or more energised after treatment; others may feel temporarily tired.

Aftercare (next 24 hours)

  • Rest and avoid overexertion.
  • Don't sleep within 3 hours of your Hijama session.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat nourishing, light meals.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting.
  • Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine.
  • Keep the treated area clean and dry.
  • Avoid very hot showers, baths, saunas or swimming immediately after. You can shower the following day, giving the area time to settle.
  • Multiple sessions may be recommended depending on your health concerns and treatment goals.

  • Pressure is always adapted to what feels right for you — just say if you'd like more or less.
  • Used to support circulation, mobility, relaxation and pain relief.
Moxibustion

How it's offered

  • Moxibustion is included as part of an acupuncture session, not as a standalone treatment.
  • Preparation and aftercare follow the same guidance as Acupuncture (see above).

During your treatment

  • Moxa — a soft, dried herb (mugwort) — is gently warmed near or on specific acupuncture points.
  • You'll feel a pleasant, radiant warmth on the skin.
  • Your practitioner stays with you throughout and removes the warmth long before it becomes uncomfortable.

  • Cups are usually left in place for around 3 minutes per area, or smoothly glided over a little oil for a gentler effect.

These are general guidelines — your practitioner will always give you personalised advice on the day, based on your treatment and how you're feeling.
